A slide fest in this BBC One Scotland closedown from 1984.

We’re not sure for how long BBC One Scotland followed this format at closedown, but from examples we’ve seen from the 1981 – 1985 period, this seems to be a relatively unusual end-of-day routine for BBC Scotland.

Between the clock and globe (with National Anthem), the announcer/director inserts a preview of the following evening’s programmes – but not by means of a menu graphic. Instead, each programme is previewed using a dedicated slide, before landing on a conventional programme menu at the end of the sequence.

Video content

[00:00:00] CLOCK: BBC One Scotland clock. This mechanical device would remain in use until the launch of BBC One’s new on-screen presentation on 18th February 1985.

[00:00:25] PROGRAMME GRAPHIC: BBC One Scotland slide for Noel Edmonds Late Late Breakfast Show.

Note that the ‘C’ in the ‘BBC SCOTLAND’ logo is displayed correctly on these slides – and does not match the adjusted version shown on the globe and clock, introduced in autumn 1984.

[00:00:33] PROGRAMME GRAPHIC: BBC One Scotland slide for Bob’s Full House.

[00:00:39] PROGRAMME GRAPHIC: BBC One Scotland slide for Juliet Bravo.

[00:00:43] PROGRAMME GRAPHIC: BBC One Scotland slide for Dynasty.

[00:00:48] PROGRAMME GRAPHIC: BBC One Scotland slide for Wogan. Notice that the announcer/director almost moves on to the next slide a little prematurely.

[00:01:01] PROGRAMME GRAPHIC: BBC One Scotland slide for Humphrey Lyttleton. This is an old slide (denoted by the text font, in use between 1976 and 1983). Notice that rather than using the updated ‘BBC SCOTLAND’ logo, the ‘1’ (from the old ‘BBC1 SCOTLAND’ branding) has been blacked out in the logo at the top of the slide.

[00:01:06] PROGRAMME GRAPHIC: BBC One Scotland slide for Film: The Offence.

[00:01:15] MENU GRAPHIC: Saturday night on BBC One Scotland.

[00:01:28] IDENT: BBC One Scotland globe and National Anthem.
