This mechanical model is believed to have been introduced in November 1969, around the same time that BBC One launched its colour service and updated its ident.
[00:00:00] IDENT: although the mechanical device was introduced in 1969, there were some alterations during its period of on-air service.
We believe it started out life with the ‘COLOUR’ text in regular font, just like its BBC One equivalent. But by 1972, the word had been italicised – again, in line with BBC One.
There were some colour alterations too – most of which were ad hoc. For example, it was not uncommon for the ident to have a black background (see below) or for everything in the foreground to be coloured cyan, rather than the mix of white and cyan shown here.
[00:00:00] IDENT: one of the colour variations of the 1969 – 1974 BBC Two symbol.
