FROM THE ARCHIVE OF: The TV Room
UTV falls off the air late at night in 2000.
[00:00:00] INFORMATION GRAPHIC: here we see the caption that was radiated from the Divis transmitter due to a loss of feed from UTV in Belfast.
We don’t know what caused the UTV feed to Divis to go down.
There was no music or test tone with the caption – just silence.
At some point in the 1990s, these fault captions – generated at the main transmitter sites – were updated. In the 1970s and 1980s, teletext-style captions were often seen during ITV strikes. Here’s one from a strike that blacked out TV-am in 1985.
These captions also kicked in if the picture feed from the TV station was lost. Similar fallback captions were used for Channel 4. We’re not sure if something similar was in place for Channel 5.
