VIDEO: Panorama close and BBC One Northern Ireland continuity followed by BBC Nine o’Clock News opening. Announcers: Roger Maude (network); Michael Nunan (BBC NI). Presenters: David Dimbleby (Panorama); Angela Rippon (BBC Nine o’Clock News). TX DATE: 8th December 1980. COPYRIGHT: BBC.

Video content

[00:00:00] PROGRAMME: the close of an edition of Panorama.

Presenter: David Dimbleby.

[00:00:34] PROGRAMME GRAPHIC: standard BBC Two slide design – for Ireland: A Television History.

Robert Kee’s major new television series continues tomorrow at 9.30pm on BBC Two.

[00:00:45] PROGRAMME GRAPHIC: a relatively unusual template to promote a programme tomorrow evening on BBC One: Platform One.

The programme title and transmission time are faded up separately.

[00:01:02] PROGRAMME GRAPHIC: a cross-channel promotion graphic for a BBC Two programme – Not the Nine o’Clock News.

The programme is starting on BBC Two now.

A variation of the template seen in the previous junction. Again, featuring a ‘2’ logo previously associated with BBC Radio 2 in promotional materials. This style of cross-channel promotion graphic was relatively short-lived.

[00:01:08] IDENT: the standard BBC One Northern Ireland globe symbol is used to link into the national news.

The clock device would normally have been used for this junction. But it presumably was unavailable on this particular occasion – perhaps due to a malfunction of some sort.

The picture roll when exiting the network feed and switching to the local ident was normal for BBC Northern Ireland during this era. A similar picture roll is experienced when rejoining the network feed.

The VHS recording will have exaggerated the picture disturbance slightly but these were often quite bad when seen live too.

[00:01:28] PROGRAMME: just under a minute from the start of the BBC Nine o’Clock News, taking in the opening headlines.

Presenter: Angela Rippon.
