This Day in History: 1984-09-03

The first edition of the new look BBC early evening news programme airs on BBC One: Six o’Clock News. The new programme was edited by Ron Neil. Sue Lawley and Nicholas Witchell (who moved from the reporting staff to become a permanent member of the news presenting team) presented the first edition and would be the regular presenters.

George Fenton composed the new theme tune. Patrick Lunt – BBC Radio 2 announcer/news presenter – provided the opening voiceover, introducing the presenters over the opening titles.
