This Day in History: 1985-09-09

Phillip Schofield presents the links between children’s programmes on BBC One for the first time – in-vision. Until now, the BBC One announcer introduced children’s programmes out-of-vision, using the channel’s standard presentation (the globe symbol and slides).

Schofield presented the junctions from the BBC One continuity announcer’s suite (NC1 Con, or ‘The Broom Cupboard’ as Schofield and his successors referred to it). NC1 Con had rarely appeared on-screen previously.

In-vision links for children’s programming wasn’t entirely new to the BBC – in the late-1940s/early 1950s, Jennifer Gay and Janette Scott among others appeared on-screen to introduce programmes.
