[00:00:00] COUNTDOWN: for a period in the late-1970s, the Schools and Colleges logo on the countdown device was seen to animate.
It’s not clear why it later became static. It has been suggested that the mechanical element that caused the animation effect broke down and was not repaired.
The track playing here is Mahler’s Suite aus Den Orchesterwerken von J. S. Bach – Gavotte I, Gavotte II.
[00:00:23] GRAPHIC: a white on red ‘Announcement for Teachers’ graphic. The design of this caption varied quite a bit over the years.
[00:00:30] PROGRAMME GRAPHIC: this style of unbranded programme slide was common where a programme was being shown on both channels within fairly close proximity (for example, within the same week).
In this case, the slide is for the further education programme Volunteers.
[00:00:55] PROGRAMME GRAPHIC: standard BBC One slide for Scene. There is a verbal warning that the programme begins with violent scenes from an episode of Gangsters, which was originally shown in the late evening on BBC One.
[00:01:11] PROGRAMME: the opening of Scene. As described above, the programme begins with an excerpt from an episode of Gangsters.
