We don’t know what caused the UTV feed to Divis to go down.
There was no music or test tone with the caption – just silence.
At some point in the 1990s, these fault captions – generated at the main transmitter sites – were updated. In the 1970s and 1980s, teletext-style captions were often seen during ITV strikes. Here’s one from a strike that blacked out TV-am in 1985.
These captions also kicked in if the picture feed from the TV station was lost. Similar fallback captions were used for Channel 4. We’re not sure if something similar was in place for Channel 5.
