[00:00:00] PROGRAMME: we start with a report on the BBC’s announcement by Richard Watson. Unfortunately, we missed the first portion of Richard’s report.
We join Richard when he relays a blunt statement from ITV on the matter:
“This is clearly a betrayal of BBC One’s public service values. It cannot be in the interest of licence payers to have the two main news bulletins head-to-head.
“BBC One is being driven by competition from its commercial rivals rather than by its public service obligations and that is bad news for licence payers.”
Richard gets the views of some members of the public. We then hear from culture secretary, Chris Smith, who wasn’t happy about the BBC’s decision, but says that ultimately it’s a matter for the BBC.
Our clip also includes an interview with BBC chairman, Sir Christopher Bland. The interview is conducted by Jeremy Vine.
