Grampian TV ends its Monday evening with a summary of the local news and weather.

[00:00:00] PROGRAMME GRAPHIC: a slide for the late North Headlines.

[00:00:04] PROGRAMME: Colin Lamont presents the late news summary, from a Presentation studio.

The weather forecast and closedown sequence can be viewed in the clip below.

VIDEO: Weather followed by Grampian TV closedown. Announcer: Colin Lamont. Voiceover: John Jason (TV-am/local radio trail). TX DATE: 21st August 1984. COPYRIGHT: STV Group plc.

Video content

[00:00:00] GRAPHIC: a series of map-based slides with weather summary text overlaid. The final ‘Outlook’ slide is a shot of some dramatic looking clouds, with text overlaid.

[00:01:15] SERVICE PROMOTION: a couple of slides that seem to be pre-recorded on tape, with an accompanying voiceover and music.

The first slide – of the TV-am logo – is to promote TV-am’s Good Morning Britain, starting at 6.25am.

A second slide promotes Northsound Radio, Radio Tay and Moray Firth Radio.

[00:01:51] CLOCK: with the time at 12.40am, Grampian TV has come to the end of its day.

The announcer points out that Grampian will be back on air from 9.25am.

[00:02:40] PROGRAMME: the National Anthem and a visual of a Scottish flag are played in from tape.

We fade to black and silence at [00:03:35]. However, after a few seconds, announcer Colin Lamont provides a verbal reminder to viewers to switch off their TV set and unplug it from the mains.

Test tone is very slowly faded up from [00:03:55]. Although our clip includes a little under two minutes of test tone, our source recording has nine minutes of tone, before the recording terminates.

We’re not sure for how long test tone was typically broadcast each night by Grampian TV.
