This trail is a good demonstration of the issues with encoding techniques used by broadcasters in the early years of digital TV. There’s a lot of pixellation here – particularly in the final frames of the trail.
[00:01:41] IDENT: the BBC Two Optic ident is used to link into an episode of Star Trek.
The appearance of the ident causes a switch in the aspect ratio to 4:3, as the next programme was produced in that format.
In the early years of digital TV, if a programme was produced in 4:3, the BBC usually switched to 4:3 for the ident event leading into the programme.
